Unauthorized Charges for PPE
The Department is aware that some insurance consumers are being charged for personal protective equipment, such as masks, gowns, and gloves (PPE) related to increased costs due to COVID-19, at the time of an in-person visit to a participating provider or dentist.
The Department has directed insurers to immediately notify participating providers and participating dentists, that they should not charge insureds fees for PPE. If an insured has been wrongfully charged, the applicable provider or dentist should provide a refund. Insurers have been directed to resolve any issues regarding increased costs due to COVID-19 with their participating providers and dentists, and insureds should be held harmless for such charges.
If you have been wrongfully charged a fee for PPE, contact your insurer. If your insurer does not resolve the matter, you may file a complaint with the Department. To file a complaint, use the Department’s consumer complaint form or contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 342-3736.
