SCAMMERS USING DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL SERVICES PHONE NUMBER, COUNTERFEIT DFS LICENSES AND LETTERHEAD
The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) has learned that scammers are using a DFS phone number, (212) 480-6400, to call consumers about fraudulent “grants.” Do not provide any personal information if you receive a call from this number. DFS does not make unsolicited calls to the public. These calls are not connected to DFS in any way, and the people or companies using this number are not authorized to do so.
In addition, DFS has been notified that scammers posing as money transmitters, lenders, consultants, and other providers of financial services have disseminated licenses and other documents on DFS letterhead which purport to be issued by DFS but which are in fact fraudulent. These counterfeit licenses and documents appear to confer authority by DFS to engage in various financial services, but they are sham; DFS did not issue them, the people or companies utilizing them are not authorized to do so, and any websites on which they may appear are fraudulent.
These counterfeit licenses and documents are not connected to DFS or any other government entity. DFS regulates all New York state-licensed and state-chartered financial institutions including banks, credit unions, mortgage bankers and brokers, licensed lenders, money transmitters, check cashers, budget planners, as well as insurance companies. Consumers and others contemplating engaging in a transaction with a financial services provider and wishing to verify whether a person or entity is licensed by DFS should visit the DFS website's Who We Supervise page to confirm that the person or entity is licensed by DFS..
DFS accepts complaints about scams involving a financial product or service. To file a complaint, please visit our website at www.dfs.ny.gov/complaint, or contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 342-3736.
